In Hand
The sky today is clear and the week's humidty and warmth is predicted. The temperature sits at 67 degrees fahrenheit. Today is Tuesday.
Losing track of time. Almost like it doesn't much matter. Then, there's the losing track of reality. And it seems that may not matter much either. Our reality is nonsense. Things are growing more surreal and we as a human specieis seem to be ignoring the signs that are telling us we are entering a new set of challenges. Those challenges will be related to issues that go beyond nation states. And no one has done a very good job of developing skills of cooperation, collaboration, consideration of others, not just self.
Side note: There's a beautiful yellow-breasted bird that just sat on the rose vine that sits next to the window where I'm sitting. S/he isn't much interested n the vine - there's nothing to munch. So, off s/he goes, into the air and the next place that might show promise of sustenance.
This is kind of how we are as people. We land on things here, there - and maybe there will be something that nourishes - whether the body or the soul. For those who already have certain skills in hand, like artists, musicians, poets - the ones who see reality as interconnected and at times, necessarily disconnected – they are the ones who will make it handily through the times ahead.
Knowing stuff has been the currency up to now. There are a few who know things that are really practical. Those would be the ones who know how to build, repair, and reinvent from nothing. Thinking: plumbers, carpenters, electricians, people who understand the sources of edible growth, people who can sew and make things that human begins may need to stay warm, forage, or just be comforted at night. The ones who have gathered all kinds of knowledge about how things work, systems (that are breaking apart), organizational theories, strategy – they were useful at some point. Not now.
We have entered a new era that is saying loud and clear: if you want to survive and you want your children and their children, and their children to go on - you need to flip a switch sooner than later. There are some interesting signs: fewer people deciding that spending four years in college is the best way to go for now. Many intellectuals are finding ways to feed their intellect through other expressions - creative ways to share how the moments are changing. And, the rest of us are blessed to be able to meet such folks and encounter how they live, work, and see our world.
For now, thinking about what I have in hand as a useful skill and how to share. That's the other thing – sharing. It's not something we cultivate as a way to be in the world - especially where I live today. It is considered by some to be unwise, risky, and even dumb.
I've always just been an average student - both in school, and it seems now, in life.
