Delight
The skies have opened and the air is crisp. The temperature is 41 degrees Fahrenheit. Today is Friday.
When the skies bring light and color after rains, people seem to walk with a sense of security and wonder at seeing what the medicine of water brings. Here, it is hard to deny that delight is a part of living! The air is clear, the mind is clear.
Watching the birds and squirrels play in their respective universes brings a smile and being wrapped in a warm jacket allows for a human being to share in the fun. These other beings are so seriously silly as they go about finding their own kind of delight in life.
When friends come together, whether it is for a meal, to share life stories, to plan and create an experience for others to be inspired and loved - another kind of delight!
As I am writing, the immensity of change during my lifetime hits: a text from an old friend who is in mid-flight comes along with a picture of me twenty-five years ago , attached to an essay I wrote about the future of race relations in a book he is reading. The words I can see, indeed are familiar and the message still seems to reflect what holds meaning to this day.
Think about the wondrousness of this - the capacity to touch in, the technology of communication in mid-air, in real-time! Did you imagine this could be ten years ago? It is a reminder about the importance of imagination, re-imagination, creativity, and synchronicity. All of the coincidences, the vision, the skill sets, the composting of debates and doubts about what is possible - these were among the gauntlets that had to be run through to get to what is today, a very common way e stay in touch with each other!
With all of the sadness and tragedy in the world, it is a true blessing to have an awareness of the totality of our circumstances, including the capacity to hold wonder and not only the tragedies that we face. Everyday, we are given the opportunity to remember and to foresee all at once. This happens when things that seem so unremarkable (like getting a text out of the blue) enter our day’s experiences. In this awareness, we can remember that today’s unimaginable is tomorrow’s common way of life. We can make choices to explore the unknown with a feeling of magic being something real. And we can know that the experience of delight also changes and can multiply.
For a moment in time, why not allow yourself to accept the unspoken invitation to bring delight into the lives of others, without even knowing that is what we are doing? Don’t you love the imagination in this apple? It’s a paper cut… all of it!
